LEADING FROM ALIGNMENT EPISODE 272 – HARNESSING THE ENERGY OF CORE VALUES – PART 2

by | Feb 4, 2025 | Leadership, Ministry Leader, Pastor, Values | 0 comments

Last week we began a two-part conversation on the irreplaceable role core values play. Core values answer the question, how. How do we behave on our way to the end zone? Core values provide the fuel that thrusts our organization toward its God-given vision. In today’s episode we explore how leaders can utilize core values to shape the culture they need.

How to use core values to shape culture

Teaching

  • Annual core values series.
  • For each value: What does it mean? Why does it matter? What behaviors are behind the value?

Modeling

  • More caught than taught.
  • Starts with the leadership team.
  • When you lead by example, you shape culture.

Celebration

  • What gets celebrated gets repeated.
  • Catch your people living out the values.
  • When you celebrate, you shape the culture.

Accountability

  • When you bring correction to someone consistently living outside of the core values, you shape the culture.
  • Tolerating behavior that flies in the face of core values inspires cynicism and becomes difficult to reverse.
  • When leaders take the difficult step of letting a strong performer go because of a values mismatch, they send a powerful message about their commitment to their values, and usually find improved performance by the remaining teammates.
  • Keeping someone who clearly doesn’t fit culturally is almost always a disservice to that person.

Your culture will take a lifetime to shape.
