There comes a point in life when the chase for paychecks, promotions, and possessions fades into the background. What once drove us no longer defines us.
Instead, a deeper question rises to the surface: What legacy will I leave behind?
In this week’s podcast, we’re talking about transitioning into the legacy stage of life and ministry. It’s a shift from building for ourselves to investing in others. From accumulating to multiplying. From striving for success to leaving a lasting imprint.
Defining the shift
- As we age, we think (or we should think) more about legacy.
- Legacy is a natural/healthy transition as opposed to a loss of productivity/relevance.
Why this transition matters
- Money and accomplishments fade, but legacy endures.
- Legacy is comprised of the seeds of faith, love, and time we sow into others.
Key indicators of the legacy stage
- More interest in people than possessions. Coaching, discipling, and passing along wisdom become more prominent.
- More concern about contribution than consumption.
- Living with an open hand. Laying up treasure in heaven.
- More focus on the eternal than the temporal.
Challenges in the transition to legacy
- Redefining identity apart from productivity. Core vs. peripheral identity.
- Fear of irrelevance or being forgotten.
Practical ways to transition to legacy
- Begin coaching someone intentionally. Find your Timothy.
- Be generous with your time and energy.
- Write down your story, faith journey, and lessons learned along the way.
Final thoughts
- Legacy-building isn’t reserved for “great leaders” or “famous people.” Every leader has influence—within family, friendships, church, or community.
- It’s never too late to start; even small intentional actions today create a powerful ripple effect for generations.
What are you planting today that will live beyond you?
