One of the biggest leadership challenges we face often lies between our own ears. It’s not the external obstacles that trip us up most—it’s the internal ones: self-doubt, fear of failure, ego, perfectionism, or an unwillingness to listen or adapt. But when leaders grow in self-awareness and learn to manage their inner dialogue and emotional triggers, their influence and effectiveness increase significantly. Today, John and Jim dive into four powerful strategies for overcoming the internal roadblocks that hold leaders back.

How do we get out of our own way?

Self-awareness

  • Quiet reflection with the Lord and a journal.
  • Self-discovery: DISC, Enneagram profiles.
  • Those humans closest to you who serve as a mirror.

Tame your inner dialog

  • Self-talk is the running internal conversation we have with ourselves.
  • Hezekiah Walker: “Each and every day people sabotage themselves with the “I can’ts” and the “I’m not good enoughs” in their minds.
  • More than simply ignoring the negative words running in our head and spilling out of our mouths. Includes taking captive these negative words and replacing them with the truth.

Let go of perfectionism

  • Perfection is the enemy of good.
  • Perfection is a futile attempt to control
  • Perfectionism paralyzes.
