LEADING FROM ALIGNMENT PODCAST EPISODE 323: SHORT-TERM OR LONG-TERM PAIN?

by | Feb 17, 2026 | Leadership, Ministry Leader, Pain, Pastor

Fractured relationships may heal when we address them—and sometimes they won’t. But either way, their grip on our health begins to break the moment we stop punting. In today’s episode, we explore how unresolved tension shapes leaders, how to face hard conversations with courage, and why this kind of short-term pain is often the doorway to long-term freedom. If you’re navigating a difficult relationship—or helping others through one—this conversation will bring clarity and hope.

The Story of John’s Tooth

In life and leadership, you can choose short-term pain, or long-term pain.

Pain in personal relationships

  • We often silently hope personal relational pain magically goes away on its own.
  • We tend to put up with long-term pain because we fear the intensity of short-term pain.
  • When we wait too long to deal with relational pain, the infection spreads and contorts the situation into even more painful territory.

Pain in professional relationships

  • A relational or competency issue, or a values fit problem.
    • Square pegs into round holes.
    • A good person slotted in the wrong role.
    • A good person in the right role who lacks resources and support.
    • In some instances, an extraction may need to take place.

Closing Thoughts

  • What are you facing in your personal or organizational relationships today that is causing you pain?
  • Your willingness or unwillingness to choose short-term pain over long-term pain is a predictor of your leadership trajectory.
