Leading a church can be one of the most meaningful callings in the world—but it can also quietly cost you the very things God never intended you to lose. In this episode, we’re narrowing the noise down to three truths every lead pastor must understand to stay healthy for the long haul: why your family matters more than your role, why your identity can’t be built on your ministry, and why an unchecked pace is the fastest path to burnout. If you want a ministry that lasts—and a life that’s still whole when it does—this conversation is for you.
Three Truths:
You can lose the church you lead and still have a great life (Priority)
- You can lose the church you pastor and still have a great life. If you lose your family, it will be much tougher to have a great life. And if you lose your family, you will likely lose your ministry… at least for a season.
- 1 Timothy 5:8: “If anyone does not provide for his family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” (NIV).
- God will not call us to do something in one arena that would force us to disobey Him in another arena.
The church you lead can lose you and they can still have a great life (Identity)
- Our sense of identity can get way too wrapped up in what we do for a living.
- If we get our identity more from the people we serve than from the God we love we can over-estimate how important we are in the equation.
- I Corinthians 3:6 – “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow.”
An unfettered pace is the most common cause of personal failure (Longevity)
- We tend to do stupid things when we get tired.
- Matthew 11:28-30: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (NIV).
- The more growth that takes place in your ministry, the more pace becomes an issue. And the more tempted you will be to rationalize an out-of-control schedule.
- God has given us the Sabbath as a reality check.
- God gave us the Sabbath as a gift… as a weekly reset button.
- When you regulate your pace by obeying Sabbath… you will discover a capacity you never thought possible
Four reflective questions to ask yourself:
- Is my family getting my leftovers?
- Is God being glorified by the schedule I keep . . . or is He getting my leftovers too?
- Do I give myself permission to relax, to have leisure?
- Would other people think I am working too many hours and/or living under too much stress?
