LEADING FROM ALIGNMENT PODCAST EPISODE 340: THE LEADERSHIP LIE: WHY YOU CAN’T AFFORD TO SKIP FRIENDSHIP

by | Jun 16, 2026 | friendship, Leadership, Ministry Leader, Pastor, Relationships

What if the reason you feel stretched thin isn’t your workload—but your isolation? Many of us quietly believe we don’t have time for friendships, but the truth is we make time for what we value. And in the pursuit of productivity, relationships are often the first thing we sacrifice. Yet from the very beginning God declared: “it is not good for man to be alone.” We were never designed to do life or leadership on our own. In this episode, we’re confronting the hidden cost of isolation and why meaningful friendships might be the missing piece to a fuller, healthier, more impactful life.

Barna Report (2017)

  • 66% of lead pastors reported having no deep friendships.

The lies we believe

  • I don’t have time for friendships.
  • Production is more important than friendship.

The resulting behavior

  • Neglecting friendship and substituting it with work.

The core issue

  • We were never designed to do life alone.
  • Genesis 2:18: “It is not good for man to be alone.”
  • No amount of success can replace your need for friendship.

Why friendship matters more than you think

  • Ministry is serious business.
  • Life and ministry are simply better when shared with good friends.
  • Friendship directly impacts your emotional and mental health.
  • Healthy friendship helps us grow up.
  • Calling, gifting, and spiritual anointing don’t replace what only friendship can give you.

A simple but powerful shift

  • Schedule your friendships like you schedule your work.

What really matters in the end

  • At the end of your life, you won’t be measured by the size of your church, or the success of your business, or the scale of your accomplishments.
  • You’ll be measured—at least in part—by your relationships.
  • Long after achievements fade, relationships are what remain.

Who are you making time for this week?
