LEADING FROM ALIGNMENT PODCAST EPISODE 350: GUARDING THE FLOCK

by | Sep 1, 2026 | Discernment, Leadership, Ministry Leader, Pastor | 0 comments

The calling of every pastor is not only to feed the sheep but also to protect them. Today’s episode offers practical, biblical conversations on spiritual discernment, faithful leadership, and identifying influences that threaten the health of Jesus’ Church.

Discerning a wolf:

Become a fruit inspector

  • Jesus: “You will recognize them by their fruit.” (Matthew 7:16)
  • The fruit of the spirit vs. charisma or talent.

Observe their motives

  • Are they using people for their personal gain – attention; finances, control?

Watch how they respond to correction

  • Are they teachable? Coachable?
  • Do they blame others for their mistakes? Do they blame you?

Pay attention to their relationships

  • Have they left a trail of relational wreckage in their wake? Are they unifying or dividing?
  •  Do you feel marginalized or diminished around them?

Does their private life match their public life?

  • We all have room to grow here. But look for patterns.

Grow your discernment

  • God will speak to you if you slow down long enough to listen.
  • If something feels off don’t ignore it.
  • Explore it with the Holy Spirit and trusted advisors.

Practical tips when suspicious you’re dealing with a wolf:

  • Get the facts.
  • Using Matthew 18 as your guide.
  • Involve your board if you feel unsure about your discernment.
  • Protect the congregation while treating the individual in question with fairness/dignity.

Not everyone who is immature is a wolf. Nor is everyone who has disagreement with you. Watch for fruit, for patterns, for motives, for coachability.
