Every pastor and leader carries scars. Some are meant to be shared because God can use them to bring healing, hope, and freedom to others. Others are meant to remain private. Not because they don’t matter, but because they don’t need an audience.
In today’s episode, John shares a deeply personal moment of looking at his surgical scars and sensing the Lord say, “Not all scars need to be memorialized.” That simple statement leads to a larger conversation about vulnerability, validation, emotional health, and learning to discern which scars should become part of our story—and which ones should simply be filed away.
Not Every Scar Needs an Audience
- Why we might feel compelled to share our wounds with others.
- The difference between healthy vulnerability and seeking validation.
- Sometimes a scar is simply a scar—and belongs in the “personal file.”
A Personal Moment
- The Lord’s prompting: “Not all scars need to be memorialized. Some are so significant that they must be. Others, not so much.”
- Part of the motivation may have been wanting others to feel sorry for me.
When a Scar Does Need to Be Memorialized
- They are part of our own survival.
- It could benefit our family.
- It can become a lifeline for others.
Three Questions for Discerning Whether to Share a Scar
- Will this help me grow and become healthier?
- Will this benefit my family?
- Will this benefit a larger audience?
A Simple Framework for Discernment
- No to all three: It may belong in the personal file.
- Yes to one: There may be something worth sharing.
- Yes to two: It is more likely worth memorializing.
- Yes to all three: Possibly a story needing to be shared at the right time/in the right way.
The Danger of Seeking Pity
- When we confuse vulnerability with validation, we can create unnecessary angst.
- Am I sharing this scar to help others—or because I need others pity to make me feel valuable?
God Already Sees Every Scar
- The people around us cannot carry every one of our wounds.
- We can’t even fully carry all of them ourselves. But God can.
Question to consider:
- What scars in your life need to be memorialized?
- Which stories could bring healing and hope to others?
- What scars are you carrying that need to be filed away?
- What story are you believing that makes you feel less loved by God than you really are?
- Are you sharing your scars for redemption or validation?
- Are you becoming dependent on how others respond to your pain?
You don’t have to hide your scars. But you also don’t have to display them all
