We have talked multiple times on the podcast about releasing people vs. recruiting people. In today’s episode we unpack this principle:
The first 30 days on a new team are the most important 30 days in that person’s experience on their new team.
Baselines:
- The onboarding process should be flawless.
- Intentionality wins.
Their first 30 days should include:
- Review of ministry description. If you don’t have a description, write one.
- Get the new team member the necessary items to serve.
- Job shadowing – 1-2 times with the best trainer possible.
- Provide baseline training:
- Written checklist for executing their role where applicable.
- Discuss pertinent what-if scenarios
- NOTE: The baseline training in the first 30 days should be complemented with some kind of ongoing training throughout the year.
- Introduction of new team members to the rest of the team.
- Follow up with the trainer to see how the “fit” is working.
- Follow up with the new team member . . . any ideas to improve the ministry?
The goal of onboarding:
- Answer the question: How does a new team member/staff member become one of us?
- To introduce foundational elements new teammates need to be successful in their role.
- First impressions.
- Four questions you must answer for every new team member during onboarding:
- What do we believe in on this team?
- What is my role?
- Who are my partners?
- What does my future look like here?
