LEADING FROM ALIGNMENT EPISODE 267: PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR OWN YARD

by | Dec 17, 2024 | character, Leadership, Ministry Leader, Pastor, Reflection, Self-Evaluation

Human nature leans toward noticing problems with other people while being blind to our own. Jesus identifies this tendency when He asks: “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?”

This tendency can trip up even the best of leaders. In today’s episode we unpack how we as leaders can take care of our “own yard” first.

Tending to our own lawn—4 Postures:

Posture 1: Be teachable

  • If nobody can speak into your life, watch out.
  • invite a group of safe, competent, truth-telling people into your world.

Posture 2: Be vulnerable

  • Regularly ask God to show you what’s really going on in your heart.
  • Vulnerability means no longer pretending we’ve got it all together.

Posture 3: Be slow to speak or opine on the condition of another person’s “yard”

  • We tend to lash out at others as a protective mechanism that keeps us from having to look at our own shortcomings.

Posture 4: Take positive steps

  • Commit to less texting and posting, and to more face-to-face interaction.
  • See those you disagree with as fellow human beings, made in the image of God.
  • It takes zero character to criticize others. It takes a mature person to look in the mirror first.
