It is the second week of 2025, and we thought it would be a good idea over the next several episodes to revisit the ideas of vision casting and values development. In today’s podcast we explore part one of a conversation around a most important leadership skill: Vision development and casting.
Mission vs. Vision
- Mission: The nonnegotiable imperatives related to the Church at large. Mission speaks to “why.”
- Vision: The contribution of your local church to the overarching mission of the Church at large. Vision speaks to “where?”
Vision Development
- General Principles – Proverbs 29:18
- You must have one vision – two or more visions = chaos
- Michael Hyatt: “When we lead with vision, we move people from renters to owners.”
- Write it down.
- Cast and re-cast the vision.
- A God-given vision is bigger than you.
- Ensure it sticks.
- A Vision Script
- The driving force for the church/its leaders
- Filter for decisions.
- Informs where we put our resources.
- Is clear/compelling.
- Incorporates four elements:
- Team culture
- Impact
- Playbook
- Communication strategy
Vision pointers:
- Set aside the what . . . focus on the where . . . then deal with the what.
- Plant yourself in the future. What do you see? Want?
- Write down what you see.
- Let it simmer.
- Remember: You cannot gain organizational alignment without vision.
