Earlier this week a pastoral colleague went home to be with Jesus (way too soon). I knew Mark from a distance. We weren’t close friends; just acquaintances. I taught at his church about 2 years ago. In the few hours I spent with him, I came away impressed with his spirit, intellect, and heart for his family and his church. In our brief interactions during the past two years, his positive attitude as he struggled with cancer moved me.
Mark leaves behind his wife and three young children. He leaves behind a church that he led with distinction and skill. Our world desperately needs husbands, fathers, and leaders like him. Many people were praying for Mark and believing for a miracle. And while I’m not supposed to ask this question… today I’m asking God “why?” Not shaking my fist in anger at God… just sad and disappointed I guess. A satisfying answer to the why-question is not possible this side of heaven.
So what do we do when someone’s life ends before we think it should? For Christians, “to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.” We take comfort in knowing that Mark – a dedicated follower of Jesus Christ – is fully healed and free from pain, and enjoying the presence of Jesus. We take comfort in our sure hope… that those who love Jesus wholeheartedly will see Mark again one day. In between now and that reunion day… we grieve his loss… we pray for and support his family… we pitch in and help where needed.
Mark, we salute you today. Thank you for showing us what loving Jesus… what loving your family… and what loving your church looks like. You will be deeply missed.
