In today’s episode John & Jim tackle the tension between the beauty of “getting stuff done” and the beast of unreached goals and accompanying feelings of failure, the striving for accomplishment at the expense of relationships, and being content with busy work vs. vision, strategy, and creativity.
Order is beautiful
- Long-term planning gives way to purposeful day-to-day work.
- Sense of accomplishment issuing from reaching goals.
- Most leaders need to grow in the pursuit of order.
Order occasionally masks a beast
- Feelings of failure – Especially if goals remain unfinished.
- Forgetting about relationships – Accomplishments matter. But people matter more.
- Fearing the unknown – Our task list can become a straight-jacket preventing us from thinking creatively, strategically, or creatively.
Planning, organizing, and executing are a leader’s friends. Order is beautiful. But we must remember the beast.
