One of the most vulnerable times in an organization’s life is when it is transitioning from its current senior leader and passing the baton to the next one. In today’s episode John and Jim explore a high-level plan for a senior leadership transition. They answer two of the most frequent questions pastors ask when being coached through the leadership transition journey and then outline an example of a succession plan.

Question 1: How do I deal with the emotion of the transition I am facing and at the same time stay productive?

Question 2: Do I remain as part of the congregation or move on somewhere else?

  • Check with your spouse.
  • Check with the new pastor.
    • Are we healthy enough?
    • Can we set and enforce boundaries?
    • Can I handle not being “the guy” anymore?

An example of a succession process – 50k foot view:

  • Collaboration/review of current succession plan/timelines.
  • Work with existing leadership to clarify:
    • Vision/values.
    • Strengths/weaknesses.
    • Mood of congregation.
  • Meet with staff and board to answer questions, provide resources and support.
    • What does success look like?
    • Assemble intercessors.
    • Collaborate on Communication Plan.
    • Develop plan to help exiting pastor and new pastor to maintain their footing.
    • Helping the exiting pastor (and spouse) think through their next season.
    • How to celebrate the outgoing pastor and their family?
    • How to onboard the incoming pastor and their family?
