Today, we welcome Jason Holdridge back to the mic for part two of our conversation on leadership and vulnerability. In this episode, Jason opens up about his gripping journey with anxiety and how he’s navigated it while leading a vibrant church. The conversation wraps with powerful lessons anxiety has taught him—and how embracing those lessons has deepened both his effectiveness and authenticity as a leader
Jason – your journey has included a significant battle with anxiety over the years. Give us an overview of that struggle
- I experienced panic attacks, which were the beginning of a transformative experience in both my relationship with Jesus and understanding of myself.
What are some actions you’ve taken to lessen its grip on you?
- Initially started with medication – but over time those meds had an adverse effect on me. Ultimately, I had to wean myself off those meds with the guidance of my doctor.
- I leaned on my wife, and my church staff for support.
- I worked with a coach (and still do).
- I’ve been open about my anxiety with our congregation. It’s created a more open culture in the church.
What would you tell your 25-year-old leadership self if you could?
- Personal struggle, if responded to correctly, helps to develop compassion.
- Struggle can deepen our ability to connect with and help people.
- Sharing our struggles with others creates intimacy and intimacy allows for more meaningful impact.
- You need a safe space with a coach where you can process life and leadership.
